This is one of the best purchases of the year!, April 7, 2011 – By TNJess

I really love this camera. I have not used it as much as I would like, but with summer here I cannot wait. I also cannot wait to use the underwater case that came with the camera. I have an underwater camera that our family absolutely loves, but only takes 39 second videos and I always have trouble figuring out how to shoot them … I cannot wait to get to the pool and ocean with this camera and make some fantastic memories!

Very impressed so far, April 4, 2011 – By Alexa Escalona (Miami, FL, USA)

Just got it today in the mail; been using it a bit and so far and I like it; nice quality videos. I’ve been reading a lot of people’s reviews saying how they aren’t very impressed with the volume quality ( i think it’s excellent by the way, despite its small size) and the video quality (very good/HD/duh). Perhaps the older versions aren’t as good but this new model has me going crazy over its wonderful HD high quality video for so small a camera. I’m buying the accessories for it as I’m typing this (will leave reviews for those too!)

I LOVE it so far. Zoom quality is poor, however, but hey, it’s not made for the pros. Amazon did a great job of packing it (not too big of a box, not too small either; just right) and made it very easy to open, too.

Overall, very happy with it and can’t wait to use it more, too!

Great Value For HD Recording, March 27, 2011 – By Youtuber0515

After researching several different HD camcorders I decided to give the Flip Ultra HD a run, and after a few weeks, I am quite pleased with the device. I had been looking for a convenient camera to record family videos and to capture the random things that I run across on a daily basis that would also offer a decent video quality. As a user of PDA phones, I could easily record videos in HD, but it is not always easy to transfer files in a way that is editing friendly. Also, many cell phones don’t offer the framerate that the Flip cams do. The Ultra HD was an easy solution to these needs. The device is about the size of most of today’s cellular devices, and the controls are pretty much idiot proof for recording. One button starts and stops recording, and you have a zoom function. Aside from a few other function keys, that is it!

The video quality of the recordings you can take with this camera is pretty impressive given the simplicity of the device, but there are some issues with low lighting conditions where dark areas will show up a little hazy. The camera does not use its own lighting source, so be aware that it is best to use it in well lit areas. On the other hand, I didn’t notice any color washing in brightly lit areas. The microphone on the camera is also quite sensitive, and can record audio from a pretty impressive distance. There may be a little bit of high frequency whining if you listen to your recordings through headphones, but a good video editing software can eliminate this pretty easily.

The device is very simple to install as well. All you do is plug the camera into your computer’s USB drive, and the software installs with very little instruction. From there, you can use the dedicated editing software, or upload videos to an editing program of your choice. The included software is very basic, but lets you upload videos directly to social networking sites, or do some very simple editing. I prefer to use Adobe Premier Elements for more functionality, but the root software is very user friendly. I can’t really comment too much on the battery life due to the fact that I have not yet had the need to record anything past 20 minutes in length. Plus, I typically dump my videos to my hard drive at the end of the day, so the 2 hour capacity is a non-issue for me. If you are recording something that would require that much battery life or memory capacity, then this product won’t come close to matching the depth of your needs.

The only accessories that I have purchased for the device are the Flip Tripod that was made for Flip cams, and a second party tripod that can be used for still shots that need more height. The tripod made specifically for the Flip is handy for table shooting, and the legs can wrap around objects for dynamic shots. However, I mainly just use the device in my hand (image stabilization is excellent on the Flip Ultra). I stayed away from the off brand USB charging adapter as many reviews claimed that it makes the device heat up quickly. Having seen what overcharging and mismatched voltage can do to rechargeable batteries in the past, I am reluctant to take the risk. I stick to regular USB charging through my notebook PC while I edit my videos, and that does just fine for me. A USB cord for those with oddly placed USB ports on desktop devices might be helpful, but the chords that the manufacturer made are all pastel pinks yellows and baby blue, and just a little too feminine for my liking.

Overall, this device does everything that I expected it to do. I’m not nearly advanced enough to want more from a camcorder at this point, so the user friendly interface really makes using the Flip a joy. If my needs change to where I need better audio filtering capabilities, I will most likely dish out the extra $400 or more for a device with more accessory attachment options, but this will do more than well enough for the forseeable future.
